For the city youths, Valentine’s Day seemed to hold no added meaning as most of them appeared to be less keen on dedicating an entire day to love in the guise of Valentine’s Day. According to them, the concept of Valentine’s Day seemed obsolete, as the concept of love attained a gradual change throughout the years for many.

This year, despite no moral brigade vehemently protesting or intervening into the couples celebrating love, the city portrayed a dull look on the V-Day. When DNA spoke to the youngsters on their views about the day, they had a hostile outlook towards the entire concept of ‘Valentine’. The reasons offered by them for such indifference towards the day, were plenty.

“Most of the youth are not even aware of the philosophy of the Valentine’s Day. In the early teenage days, when the concept of expressing love seemed to be new, the day seemed exciting. However, the scenario has undergone a massive change today as such concepts appear to be primitive today,’’ said Kunal Chanda, a first year student of Indira College.

Many believe that celebrating love in the guise of Valentine’s Day is a commercial concept where flaunting and testifying love through gifts and flowers is a superficial display of emotions. “If I want to love my partner or spend time with him, then I can do it on any day as per our convenience and whims. Valentine’s Day does not hold any special meaning to us and we treat this day as any other day of the year,’’ said Shipra Jha, a post graduate student at the Ranade Institute.

Many felt the concept of love no more remained flowery and abstract, as it was earlier portrayed in movies and media. Ameya Kelkar, a designing student, said,  “The ways of celebrating love seemed to be rested more on the way they were portrayed in movies. When new to the concept of westernised love, V-Day seemed exciting. However, with the gradual learning and the incorporation of the westernisation, V-Day just does not emit the enthusiasm attached to it.’’

The coffee stalls, gift stores and dating joints, surprisingly too portrayed a deserted look on the auspicious occasion. Very few seemed to be keen on thronging on joints to celebrate love.

“Today, the youth has matured and the childish charm attached in celebrating a day for love seems an age old concept. The hectic lifestyle does not enable one to celebrate love in a full-fledged manner throughout the day. A simple wish is more than enough rather than worshiping love through westernised concept that had its roots somewhere in Rome,’’ said Pragya Singh, a Symbiosis student.
