The campaign led by Nitesh Rane, son of Maharashtra Minister Narayan Rane, against 'illegal' Shiv Vada Pav stalls in the metropolis, on Thursday got a boost with the key man behind the Shiv Sena-run scheme joining hands with him.
Shiv Vada Pav Vikreta Sangh President Sanjay Gurav, who has approached the Nitesh-led NGO Swabhimaan Sanghathana, also alleged that the Sena has pocketed Rs 15-20 Lakh through this scheme.
Gurav, in whose name Shiv Vada Pav stalls were registered, resigned from the Sena on Thursday. He accused the party of cheating many unemployed Marathi youths by allotting them ‘illegal’ vada pav (a popular street food) outlets at various locations across the financial capital.
"I had met Mayor Shraddha Jadhav and (Sena Executive President) Uddhav Thackeray several times and complained about illegal Vada Pav stalls being given to youths. But they took no action and so I had to resign and approach Swabhimaan Sanghathana to join their fight against Shiv Vada Pav stalls," Gurav said.
"Through this scheme, approximately Rs 15-20 lakh has been pocketed by the Sena," Gurav alleged.
Explaining the process of selling the stalls, Gurav said, "The stalls are given to unemployed Marathi youth for Rs 40,000 each. Also an agreement fee of Rs 15,000 per stall is charged where a clause states that if BMC razes these stalls, they would not be held responsible for the same.
Currently, there are 125 Shiv Vada Pav stalls in the metropolis. The Sena branded vada pav was launched over two years ago with the stated aim to provide employment avenue to the Marathi youngsters.
On July 5, authorities of the Mumbai civic body, controlled by the Sena-BJP combine, removed around 80 illegal stalls, some of them of Shiv Vada Pav.
"Since BMC is run by Sena anything illegal planned or executed by Shiv Sena is assumed to be considered legal. If BMC does not succeed in demolishing all the Shiv Vada Pav stalls, we will recommence our Chhatrapati Vada Pav movement," Nitesh warned.
"We want to expose how the Shiv Sena is betraying Marathi people by giving them illegal stalls," he said.
"We intend to come up with a different kind of scheme that would create employment and benefit the people," Nitesh stated.
On July 1, Nitesh had inaugurated his 'Chhatrapati Vada Pav' stall in front of a Shiv Vada Pav stall in suburban Powai.
Nitesh admits that his stall is 'illegal' but has warned Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation authorities that if they want to take action against the stall, they must raze the Shiv Sena's illegal stalls as well.
