Police sources revealed that the last formal order in this regard was received in 2006, and since then in the event of non available of a formal list, the police has been reviewing the VIP security category on the basis of their intelligence and threat perception.
“The police have been taking call on their own to provide security to VIPs,” said an Indian Police Service official, requesting anonymity. He added that, apart from ministers, eminent personalities from Bollywood, industrialists, real estate and retired police officers who served in the 1993 Mumbai riots and 1985-Operation Blue Star have been included in the list.
The government had decided to withdraw the protection given to the officers after information through RTI revealed that more than 7,000 police personnel and officers were engaged in providing protection to VIPs in Mumbai.”The protection and security branch of the city police is in charge of placing policemen for VIP security, for securing vital installations and during VIP visits,” the officer said.
The police sources said that categorisation is done by a VIP categorisation committee that is headed by state chief minister.
The chief secretary, additional chief secretary (home), director general of police and Mumbai police commissioner are members of this committee.
The police expect thousands of men to be released from the VIP security duty. “If there is a cut in security, then certainly the police manpower will increase. As of now we have not received the final list,” said Mumbai police commissioner, Arup Patnaik.
