The official website of the University of Pune (UoP) will become disabled-friendly by June next year.

The visually impaired, hearing and speech impaired, people with orthopaedic problems, mentally challenged persons and persons suffering from dyslexia can access the varsity’s own website and about 25 other websites linked to the UoP’s website.

UoP officials claimed that it would be the country’s first website by any university that would be disabled-friendly.

“The UoP management has responded favourably to the project and the UoP’s Blind Students’ Learning Centre functionaries along with authorities concerned would start working on the project shortly,” UoP officials added.

The website will be developed as disabled-friendly adhering to the norms and rules set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and Web Contents Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Coordinator of the Blind Students’ Learning Centre, Dhananjay Bhole, told DNA that there were nine types of disabilities and the website must be usable by all the disabled people.

The website will have a bigger font size (text resize) for persons with low vision, background colours can be changed, proper site navigation system software will be installed, the site will also read the images and the
hyperlinks will be adjusted properly.

The persons with auditory and speech problems will get captions and pictures instead of text for better understanding. These persons could also have classroom sessions with subtitles.

Persons suffering from various orthopaedic problems (especially of hands) can easily navigate the site with minor hardware changes on their computer keyboards.

“At present, the website cannot be accessed by disabled people. The primary research by the centre revealed that there are about 20 errors on each webpage of the site. The website errors, in this regard, are referred to the blockages which cannot be accessed by the disabled. For example the visually impaired persons cannot place the image of the UoP’s main building on the site,” he said.

The central government’s department of information technology site is disabled-friendly and is accessed by many people every day.
