In what is supposed to increase the visibility of police in the city, the top brass on Wednesday issued an order to all police stations making it compulsory for every police personnel to wear uniform while travelling from home to respective police stations. They should also be in khaki while visiting crime spots.

Of the 8,500 staff under the city police commissionerate, most of them are living at the police colonies in Indiranagar, Swargate, Wakad and Vishrantwadi.

The order further states that while riding motorcycles they should wear helmets. Additional commissioner of police (crime) AD Shinde told DNA, “The move will help to curb chain snatching, attack on policemen and non-cognizable offences in the city. We have observed that around 4,000 police personnel are travelling
in the city without wearing uniforms.”

Police stations are also located on the city outskirts like Hadapsar, Vishrantwadi, Nigdi, Hinjewadi, Warje Malwadi and, Kothrud.

A senior officer attached with the city police told DNA, “The present staff strength is insufficient. As some stations have 15-km jurisdiction, police visibility is minimal in these areas. The order will help in increasing the police presence.”
