Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam always opposed contentions made in the court by defence lawyer Shahid Azmi, before the later was murdered. Now, it’s Nikam who is likely to be the special public prosecutor in Azmi’s murder case.

The Mumbai crime branch has written to the law and judiciary department of the state home ministry and has asked for Nikam to be appointed as special public prosecutor in the case. However, the reply to the request letter is yet to come.

Ironically, Azmi had appeared as the defence lawyer opposite Nikam in the November 26, 2008 terror attack case and the 2003 twin blasts case. “We want a special public prosecutor for this case as an advocate, who is an officer of the court, was attacked.

The offence is serious,” a crime branch official said.

On February 11, this year, three men had barged into Azmi’s Kurla office and shot at him indiscriminately before fleeing. Later, crime branch officials arrested Devendra Jagtap, Pintu Dagle and Vinod Vichare from Mulund, while the fourth accused Hasmukh Solanki was nabbed on March 9. The accused were later booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

The crime branch filed a 1255-page chargesheet before the special MCOCA court last Thursday. The chargesheet listed 91 witnesses in the case.

According to the crime branch, Bharat Nepali, a former associate of Chotta Rajan, had orchestrated the attack on Azmi to “establish his supremacy” in the underworld.
