Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray today ridiculed the chief minister Prithviraj Chavan who had said that opposition to the Jaitapur nuclear power plant was a result of false propaganda by outsiders and certain political parties.

Addressing a gathering on the occasion of `Marathi Day' organised by Sena here, Uddhav said the locals were vehemently opposed to the project. "They are of the view that the land is their mother and mother's worth cannot be calculated in money."

Chavan has to respect the local sentiments. If he does not, Shiv Sena will stand by the locals and not allow the project to come up," Uddhav warned.

He also took a dig at Chavan for his allegation that "outsiders" were misleading the locals. The Chief Minister should remember that his party leader (Sonia Gandhi) was of Italian-origin and "if an imported leader is OK for him, why can't he deal with opposition of people from within the country," Uddhav asked.

Referring to the Industries Minister Narayan Rane not allowing Sena MLA Rajen Salvi to speak at the meeting yesterday, Uddhav wondered if it was democratic.

Uddhav described the `Marathi Bhasha Diwas' as a celebration of the language. "People should stop worrying about the future of Marathi. There is no threat to the language which will continue to thrive for centuries to come due to its rich culture and heritage," he said and criticised the government for not organising any official programmes to mark the day.

He also released a book, `Asmita', on how Marathi should be used in government offices.

Uddhav said the Centre should accord the status of "classical ("abhijaat") language" to Marathi, like Tamil.

"I will personally meet the President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with this demand," he added.

Mumbai Mayor Shraddha Jadhav said Shiv Sena would "tear up" the papers and documents in the functioning of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation if they were not in Marathi.
