If there is a will, there is a way. Two poor girls have made it big by the virtue of their unflinching dedication to studies and hard work.

Karishma Randhve (18), a resident of Shirwal village in Satara district, and Anjani Lahane (18) from Mangaon village in Raigad district have been selected by the University of Cincinnati (UC), Ohio in the US, as maiden recipients of the Global Opportunity Scholarship. India is the first ever beneficiary country of the UC scholarship initiative.

While Karishma is a daughter of a labourer, Anjani’s father is a farmer. It’s a struggle for both the families to eke out a living. But that have not deterred their parents to educate these girls. The duo will receive full scholarships worth Rs67.50 lakh each to pursue their bachelor’s engineering degree at the UC.

The course will commence in September 2011. The director of international admissions at the UC, Jonathan Weller, is in India to escort these students to the US.

The duo was selected from 50 students short-listed for the scholarship from rural areas of Maharashtra.  The selection process, which spread over 10 months, was carried out with the help of NGO Lend-A-Hand-India (LAHI).

After completing her primary education from Dnyansamvardhini High School in Shirwal,  Karishma completed her plus two from Pune-based Laxmanrao Apte Prashala. She used to take tuitions to fund her studies.

Anjani did her plus two from a school at Mangaon. Both were felicitated on Monday at Karishma’s school. “I am  happy that I have got an opportunity to pursue my engineering studies,” said Karishma, who would be pursuing engineering in bio-medical stream. Like Karishma, Anjani too was thrilled to get such a break.

“I would like to come back and work for development,” said Anjani, who would be studying computer engineering.
