A 37-year-old woman from Chandivli and a three-year-old girl from Tardeo tested positive for swine flu on Tuesday. But, doctors are not worried yet.

They say that the H1N1 virus has lost its virulent form and won’t be as aggressive as it was in 2009. Moreover, most people have developed a natural immunity because of extended exposure to the virus, while others have developed vaccine-induced immunity, doctors said.

“Influenza H1N1 is the most predominant virus in the air now and will continue to be so for some time. But, we will have to see how it manifests itself this season,” said Dr Abhay Chowdhary, director, Haffkine Institute.

“We have been getting throat swab samples throughout the year. The last positive swine flu case was last December. In 2010, there were a total 177 positive cases, this year we have got only two cases,” added Dr Chowdhary.

“The two patients were treated on an outpatient basis. There was no need to isolate them as the virus is in the air,” said Dr Daksha Shah, head of the epidemiology cell, BMC.

According to statistics from the directorate of health services, 23 patients have been suspected of having contracted the virus between April and June 19, and were administered Tamiflu.
Meanwhile, the city has witnessed five malaria deaths, two gastro deaths and one dengue death since June.
