For the second consecutive day, the fire brigade was called in to battle its best friend — water — after two more couples were stranded in over knee-deep waters at Bandstand in Bandra on Tuesday afternoon. It had rescued another couple at the popular seafront in similar fashion a day earlier.

Hanif Ali, 20, who works in a private company, had come with Arti Bhaskar, a college student and resident of Goregaon, while Mohammed Asif, 24, a driver, was there with Farheen Bano, 23. While Asif is a resident of Wadala, Farheen lives in Byculla.

“The couples went into the rocks in the morning, and after sitting there for one-and-a-half hours, they realised that they had been surrounded by sea water,” said senior police inspector Prakash George of the Bandra police station.“They shouted for help to the pedestrians who were walking down the road.”

Around 1pm, the fire brigade control room received information about the two couples being trapped amid rising waves at Bandstand. Meanwhile, the Bandra police was also informed and it rushed to the spot. Both the couples were rescued within an hour, after which they were brought to the Bandra police station.

The couples told the police that they had come to Bandstand for the first time as they had heard it was a popular dating haunt. They claimed they had no idea about the risk of being trapped by the tide.

“We are taking necessary steps to ensure that the incident is not repeated. We have increased police patrolling along the seashore to shoo away couples who cosy-up on the rocks,” said George.
