The officers of Economic Offences Wing (EOW) came across another interesting multi-crore fraud a la ‘Bunty’ and ‘Babli’.
A woman and her accomplice allegedly duped nearly 250 people of crores by promising them government flats.

The victims were told by the arrested duo that their hutments would be demolished by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) under its road widening project. The duo promised to get them relocated flats at cheap rates through MMRDA and also reportedly showed them few sites in the city.

Neeta Ankush Saraikar alias Neeta Aadesh Titkare and Sakharam alias Aadesh Chindu Titkare are natives of Khed district in Pune.
An EOW official said, “Whenever MMRDA undertakes road-widening projects, it relocates demolished slums and hutments. Last year, the duo got in touch with complainant Mukundsingh Rathod, a Ghatkopar resident, and said that his hutment would be demolished under the project.”

He added that Neeta told Rathod that she is a security guard in MMRDA and has contacts within the department. “She told Rathod that she can get him plush relocated rooms at cheap rates in MMRDA buildings being developed at Garodia Nagar in Ghatkopar, Bhakti Park in Wadala, Indian Oil in Mankhurd and opposite Kanjur Marg station,” the officer said.

“The duo even showed Rathod, his relatives and friends these sites and lured them. They paid Rs58 lakh to the duo for the houses. They even gave bogus allotment letters and other bogus documents, which they claimed to be of MMRDA’s. However, when the MMRDA officers checked the documents and found them bogus, Rathod lodged a complaint in June 2010,” said another official.

“We recently arrested the duo and they have been remanded in police custody till January 24 by a local court. Investigations have also revealed that they have conned nearly 250 people using the same modus operandi and, as of now, the fraud seems to be of around Rs2 crore. We have recovered a Land Cruiser, a Sumo and ornaments worth Rs31,500,” said the officer.

The police are investigating whether MMRDA officials were involved in the fraud.
