Two held for duping people by promising them gold at low rates in Mumbai

The Powai police recently arrested two accused who were involved in several cases of cheating and duping people by promising gold at very low rates. They were nabbed after police laid a trap at wine shop where they had come to strike a deal.

The trap was laid after the wine shop owner Balwinder Singh alerted the police. Sitaram, the head of the gang,  approached Singh a few days ago and told him that he and his family members were in dire need of money. He also said that they had found some gold while digging in a field at Gujarat and wanted to sell the gold immediately. He offered to sell around 1.5kgs of gold for Rs2 lakh.

A police officer said, “Sitaram had shown a sample of gold ornaments to Singh after which he agreed to buy the gold. Singh’s friend alerted him as he had been cheated by in a similar way earlier.” He added, “This raised suspicion about the accused alerted the police. Acting on the tip off, the trap was laid on Wednesday and two members of gang identified as Gangabai Solanki, 55 and Laxman Gelod, 32, were nabbed.”

According to police, the modus operandi was, once Sitaram spoke to the targeted victim, Gelod and Solanki would later meet him and collect the money and give fake gold ornaments to the victim and flee.
