Two doctors from the Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil Government Civil Hospital in Sangli were suspended after a patient died after an injection was administered on him on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Atish Kishor Ghadge (25) of Shantinagar in Sangli.

“Medical officer Dr Lalit Mohan and resident doctor Dr Prachi Nirmale have been suspended temporarily. A six-member probe committee comprising three public representatives has been appointed,” Miraj Government Medical College dean MP Parchand told DNA.

Seven years ago, Ghadge had undergone a heart surgery and was regularly taking the injection Penicillin “Penidure”.

On Thursday morning, the patient was treated with the injection at the hospital, and collapsed after returning to the general ward. He was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU), where he was declared dead. The police were called and post-mortem was carried out.

The victim’s relatives, who rushed to the hospital, were livid after seeing his body labelled as unclaimed and demanded action against the doctors.

Parchand said the reaction test for penicillin was taken on the deceased before administering the injection, while the police were informed that no one had accompanied the patient when he was treated with the injection.

One of the doctors from Sangli zilla parishad told DNA that the deceased patient would have suffered from anaphylaxis. “It is a serious, rapid and allergic reaction caused due to many reasons, including injections of many types and one of which is Penicillin. It can happen even after taking the reaction test on patient with minor dose before administering the main dose,” he said.
