Two medical cadets studying in the fourth year at the Pune-based Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) drowned at the institute’s swimming pool in the wee hours of Sunday, apparently in an intoxicated condition. A third cadet exited the pool and called for help when he saw his colleagues drown.

The students, Gautam Mishra (23) of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Naresh Bansal (22) of Bathinda in Punjab, were residents of the boys’ hostel on the campus. Anurag Gupta, who also entered the pool, saw both his friends struggling in the half-full pool and, not being a swimmer himself, alerted others nearby to assist in rescuing them.

The police said the trio was under the influence of alcohol, and none of them knew how to swim.

Sub-inspector Ashok Patil of Wanavdi police station, who is investigating the case, said Gautam and Naresh were already under the influence of alcohol when they went to Anurag’s room with a liquor bottle late at night.

They later decided to take a stroll on the campus, but changed plans when Naresh insisted on going for a dip in the swimming pool, situated a distance from the hostel. As the gate leading to the pool was locked, the trio scaled the walls and went swimming.

When Gautam and Naresh started shouting for help, Anurag managed to come out of the pool and ran towards the canteen to seek help. It was too late by the time other cadets from the hostel reached the pool. They desperately tried to pump out water and resuscitate Naresh and Gautam.

Assistant police inspector Madhukar Javanjal said, “We were patrolling in the AFMC area when we received a call from the campus that two bodies had been found at the swimming pool. We rushed the duo to the Command Hospital, where they were declared dead at 4.30 am on Sunday.”

The fefence PRO, in a statement, said the lives of two young bright medical cadets could not be saved despite the best efforts of the AFMC.

The Wanavdi police has filed a case of accidental death. The defence authorities have initiated a separate probe to ascertain the reasons for the deaths.
