It’s Twestival time! On Thursday, the twitter community will come together in 174 cities across the world, including Mumbai, to raise funds for a cause.

Even if you are not on Twitter or have never heard of it, you can still join the Twestival and help provide clean drinking water to people.

Twestivals started in 2008 in London as volunteer-run fundraising events for people who know each other through the micro-blogging service, Twitter. At the Twestival, people would be able to meet the local twitter community offline and participate in a fundraising effort over some drinks or food.

But the organisers in Mumbai have made it more inclusive — they say anybody can join. “This event is for charity and charity comes from the heart, not from joining social networking sites,” says 13-year-old Monik M Pamecha, one of the organisers and a student of Podar school.

You do not need a ticket to participate in the event, but by purchasing one for Rs250 at the venue, you can contribute to the cause. Alternatively, you can also donate at the event. Online donations can be made at mumbai.twestival.com or http://www.charitywater.org/twestival/.

This year’s festival, that aims to raise $1million for a water charity, is going global. While the flagship event will be held in London, simultaneous programmes will be held in 174 cities across the world, making it, effectively, a 24-hour charity event.

Twestival organisers in London got in touch with Pamecha, Netra and Mohnish from Mumbai’s twitter community in November, requesting them to put together an edition in Mumbai. The trio set to work, and for three months they held many meetings. However, all their efforts seemed to be in vain, since they could not find a sponsor. But, on Tuesday, Microsoft logged in, and the twitters are back!
