In a daring daylight robbery on Friday, three unidentified armed robbers, with one of them posing a customer, entered the RG Jewellers at Ghatkopar (West) and after threatening its owner with revolvers decamped with gold ornaments weighing 1.5 kilogram.

The incident took place at RG Jewellers, located on the ground floor of the Tulsi Bhavan at Kapolwadi, barely two hundred metres away from the Ghatkopar unit office of crime branch.

Narrating the incident, Kanak Shah, 40, owner of jewellery shop, said, “I was alone in the shop while my servant Yogesh Kshirsagar had gone to bring some ornaments from the other shop. A youth posing as a customer walked into the shop and sought to buy a gold ring. When I was busy showing him the rings in the shop, two of his associates entered in next two minutes.

Before I could say anything, the two whipped out revolvers and threatened me with dire consequences,” said Shah.

In next five minutes, they collected all the ornaments from the showcase and emptied them in a sack one of them was carrying. While escaping, one among the trio threatened Shah in Hindi that if he (Shah) tried to contact police or venture out of shop to alert the public, they will shoot him. Shah was shell-shocked for the first five minutes of them leaving the shop, that he simply sat in his shop and began crying. It was only later that he could muster enough courage to contact the neighbouring shopowner on phone and narrate him the incident.

Deepak Chhedva, who owns a cloth shop adjacent to Shah, immediately contacted the police.  “When the mobile van of the Ghatkopar police reached, a scared Shah was found sitting still in one corner, saying the robbers would gun him down if he ventured out,” said Chhedva.

Here too, the CCTV installed in Shah’s shop had not been functioning for the past two weeks.
