One-and-a-half years after two youth were gored to death with a shard of glass, a fast-track court in Dindoshi on Wednesday awarded the life sentence to the three perpetrators of the crime.
In the incident that took place on June 13, 2010, the two deceased — Amit Rathod, 21, and Bablu Vishwakarma, 21 — were assaulted after they teased one of the three attackers, Salim Khan, 19, saying that his long hair made him look like a girl. Soon, a full-fledged brawl ensued and Khan’s friends, Raunak Shaikh, 20, and Mohammad Qureshi, 19 — all residents of Laljipada area in Kandivli (West) — joined in.
Rathod and Vishwakarma were sitting near a garage in the Laljipad area and allegedly drinking. The trio was also sitting at some distance. This was when one of the victims commented on Khan’s long hair.
“In a fit of rage, Shaikh picked up a piece of glass lying near the garage, and while the other two accused held Rathod, Shaikh stabbed him. After that, Khan and Qureshi nabbed Vishwakarma and Shaikh also stabbed him in the abdomen,” said assistant inspector LG Shinde of the Kandivali police.
Locals rushed both victims to the Bhagwati hospital, but the duo were declared dead before admission.
