The Zaveri Bazar blast six months ago may have exposed the dearth of a trauma centre in the heart of the city, but the opportunity seems to have been lost on the state medical education department.

For, the department is yet to approve the proposed trauma management centre at Sir JJ Hospital.

While the Sir JJ group of hospitals has even identified the entrance to the casualty department at the blood bank centre as the location for the trauma centre, the state authority continues to dilly dally on the crucial proposal for the last several months. Medical action undertaken immediately following a tragic calamity — also called the Golden Hour — is critical in saving the lives of the injured.

Post-Zaveri Bazaar blast, the medical education department had ensured that the trauma centre would soon be set up on the JJ Hospital campus.

In fact, the administration of Sir JJ group of hospitals had prepared the trauma management centre proposal at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crore and forwarded it to the state authority. On July 17 this year, DNA had reported, ‘Why doesn’t JJ have a trauma centre?’ Following the report, the state medical education department had assured that the plan would soon be approved. However, the state authority has not moved an inch on the proposal, senior JJ doctors said.

Doctors at the hospital,  which has over the years seen a steady rise in victims of terror attacks being brought in for treatment, admitted to difficulties in providing comprehensive emergency medical services to patients with traumatic injuries.
Reiterating the state promise of setting up the said centre very soon, DP Sawant, minister of state for medical education,  said, “A facility like Sir JJ Hospital  trauma management centre is essential and we will definitely discuss the issue with the authorities concerned.”
Pointing out that the JJ trauma centre should not be merely an emergency room, senior surgeon and medical director Dr Gustad Davar of Hinduja Hospital said the hospital gets referrals of trauma patients from across the state. “International guidelines stipulate that the centre should come equipped with a qualified trauma surgeon, a radiologist, a physician and an anaesthesiologist, apart from being manned 24x7 by trained paramedics,” Davar said, adding that, “CT scan, MRI and X-ray facilities should also be available 24 hours.”
