Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) students will no longer have to fend off ribbing over their ‘nerdiness’. The institute will now work towards developing their all-round personality.

At the time of enrolment, students will be evaluated by professionals on their interests, ambitions and overall personality. They will then get a chance to hone their skills through certain activities and develop a competitive personality.

A batch of around 400 freshers for post-graduate courses, who will enrol in January, will be part of a pilot project, said Prof Urjit Yajnik, dean of students affairs, IIT-B. “We plan to make it a regular practice for students from all courses.”

A committee comprising professionals with expertise on human resources and psychology will assess every student’s personality on factors like interests, hobbies, achievements, ambitions and language skills. “We have several extra-curricular activities going on at the campus. The students will be persuaded to join these activities with an aim to sharpen their skills. This will help groom different aspects of their personality than just technological or curricular knowledge,” explained Yajnik.

But, decisions will be taken on an individual basis, he clarified.
A team of mentors and monitors is likely to be constituted from among the senior batches.

Besides, students, especially those who are not from the city will learn about the culture, history and way of life of the city.
