State transport commissioner VN More has said the transport department plans to tie up with 150 industrial training institutes (ITIs) to train would-be drivers of heavy vehicles.

The rising number of road accidents, of which at least 70% occur due to the drivers’ fault, has prompted the department to conceive of several measures to improve the quality of training given to drivers.

More was speaking at a national convention on road safety organised by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), an apex body of road transporters, on Sunday. He later told DNA, “The training will be provided to all drivers and not be limited to drivers of heavy vehicles. The idea is to provide professional quality in drivers’ education.”

Bal Malkit Singh, president, AIMTC, suggested the formulation of a panel comprising government officials, vehicle manufacturers and transporters, which will address “the burning issues faced by transporters with a prime focus on safety measures on the road.”
