Once again, the transgender have been denied a separate status. In spite of repeated demands by the community that its members be listed in the ‘others’ category in the Census, they have been put under the male category.

With the process of data collection set to begin on May 1, there is no time for rectification. The community naturally is upset at being denied its own status this time too.

The Census booklet released for training and informing officials on duty has stated that transgender should be included in the male category. Manisha Mhaiskar, assistant municipal commissioner of the BMC, said reporters on Friday, “The booklet has been prepared by the Census office. We have to follow the instructions to the T. Even at our training sessions, we have specified that transgender should be included under the male category. We cannot change it now.”

A teacher from western suburb, who is on Census duty, said on condition of anonymity, “The area allotted to me has many transgender. We have been asked to include them in the male category. It is unfair.”

Irked by the government apathy, transgender activist Laxmi Tripathy said, “We are still negotiating with the government to get ourselves included in the ‘others’ category. It has still not been resolved. How can the government be so apathetic to us? We are going to protest against this move.”
