Disrupted train services on Wednesday forced several Mumbai-Pune train commuters to hit the roads, only adding to the rush of train passengers seeking other means of transport to reach their destinations. However, quick thinking on the part of some transport bodies helped bring some sense of order to an otherwise chaotic day.

In light of the situation, Mumbai Pune Cool Cabs also operated between Kalyan, Dombivli and Khopoli on Wednesday. “Many people booked cabs for even short distances. Since there was a genuine problem and people were in need, we agreed. Most of them were office-goers who needed to get to work,” added Ansari.

Ellyas Ansari, member of the Mumbai Pune Cool Cab Taxi Association, said, “Our taxis faced a major traffic jam in Chembur and Vikhroli areas. It took nearly two and half hours to reach Vashi alone. Most of our cabs which left in the morning returned only late in the evening.”

Similarly, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) also decided to change its rules for a day to accommodate stranded train commuters.  Incidentally, the corporation did not add any additional services to its Mumbai-Pune route.

“On Thursday, there was more demand for local travel rather than on the Mumbai-Pune corridor. Several city routes were jam-packed,” said an MSRTC official and added, “Our field officers were out since early Wednesday morning and did a commendable job of handling the additional rush.”

The routes on which the MSRTC plied additional services were Dadar-Panvel, Vashi-Panvel, Thane-Kalyan, Thane-Bhiwandi, Mantralaya-Bhiwandi, Thane-Borivli and Thane-Bhayander.
