For a city notorious for the maximum number of rail-related deaths across and where activists have been up in arms with the railways to save injured commuters during the Golden Hour, the story of a puppy rescued from the tracks spells a ray of hope.

A little pup that was in a serious accident on the Diva-Vasai railway line has not just been rescued from the tracks and nursed back to health, but also found a new home, thanks to an animal care NGO run by a group of young people.

“The pup met with an accident on the Diva-Vasai railway track two weeks ago. The locals rescued it and took it to a veterinary doctor. The vet told them to admit the puppy into a hospital as soon as possible. It was then that the locals alerted us,” said Nilesh Bhanage of Dombivli-based Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

“The little pup’s hind legs and tail had been severed. We immediately sent our ambulance to pick up the pup and admitted it to the PAWS Murbad Rescue Center. After two weeks of intensive treatment, the pup totally recovered from its injuries,” he said.

Bhanage added, “An animal lover who lives in the Senior Citizens’ Village at Neral, Barbara Laporte, who is also the founder of Mira-Road based Society for Protection of Animals & Nature (SPAN), agreed to adopt the pup. She already has three strays rescued from the streets at Mira Road and had recently sponsored the vaccination of about 100 dogs that had been successfully completed by our team.”
