The University of Mumbai student council is planning to initiate a ‘No Headphone’ campaign to create awareness among college-goers about the ill effects of using headphones.

The idea came about last week when Saurabh Pendkar (20), a Ruia College student, was run over by a train while crossing the tracks at Kurla; he had his earphones on and failed to hear the train honk as well as the shouts of warning from onlookers.

“It is one of the ideas that came up in the student council meeting, as it is turning into their biggest concern. We have yet to finalise the whole programme, but we will surely use the social media network. We will issue a circular-cum-advisory note to the colleges about the ill effects of using headphones, and we will also make posters. We have a very short span of time to do this, since thce academic year ends in April,” said Zenia Motiwala, president, University of Mumbai student council.

She added, “We are having a meeting with our council in two days. We will then finalise a course of action.”

According to senior doctors in the ENT department of JJ Hospital, “Overuse of headphones can cause a high-frequency hearing loss. People suffering from this malady show symptoms such as the inability to hear consonants, failure to hear high pitched sounds, tinnitus (abnormally loud sounds in the ear canal for some duration), difficulty talking in groups, and inability to hear noises in the background.”

Suhas Pednekar, principal, Ruia College, said: “Apart from this tragic accident, the overuse of headphone affects hearing. Nowadays, headphones are a fad among college-goers, and we will support this kind of initiative. If the students drive the campaign, other students will definitely listen.”
