Irked by the sorry state of affairs at the city’s only dedicated hospital for the police force in Nagpada, Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik has asked authorities to take the help of medical experts and prepare a report for the modernisation of the hospital.

Patnaik paid a surprise visit to the police hospital in Nagapada on Ocotober 16. Additional Commissioner of Police (EOW) Rajvardhan, Joint Commissioner of Police (administration) SP Yadav, renowned cardiologist Dr Ramakant Panda and Dr SM Patil were also visited the hospital.

Patnaik was surprised to find that the hospital was in a bad shape. Though there were several sweepers, most of the rooms were stashed with garbage. The portion behind the staff quarters was in a filthy condition. Though there were several sweepers, the hospital was in a mess.

Sources said Patnaik wants to modernise the hospital with the help of Dr Ramakant Panda, managing director of Asian Heart Institute, and Dr Gustad Davar, medical director of the Hinduja Hospital. Patnaik has already sought help from these doctors in preparing a report. Both the doctors have shown willingness to do this job.

When this correspondent visited the hospital on Saturday, the cleanliness work was in progress. “The Police Commissioner is keen on giving a good shape to the hospital. As per his suggestions, we have removed the debris and cleaned the hospital. More than one truck of debris was removed from the hospital premises,” hospital surgeon Dr Patil said.

“The hospital building is more than 50 years old. We need an administrative officer to look in to such issues. The post is vacant for the last six years. There is a need to fill up clerical posts. We are going to buy machineries like modern ultrasonography, trade mill and pathology lab equipment.”

Patniak has assigned the task to additional CP (EOW). He has been asked to take the help of Dr Ramakant Panda of the Asian Heart Institute and Dr Gustad Davar of the Hinduja Hospital. The Police Housing Corporation will carry out the civil work.
