Mumbai: The Kalina-based Forensic Science laboratory (FSL) on Friday said that the samples given by the police in connection with the alleged rape of a foreign student of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Tiss) had proven inconclusive in providing forensic evidence.

Director of FSL, MV Garad, blamed the delay in receiving the forensic samples at the laboratory for the uncertain findings in the reports. "The victim had undergone medical checks two days after the incident. The clothes and other forensic samples were also sent much after the incident took place. Thus, the samples taken for forensic analysis did not yield any results," he said.

"We have sent reports of some of the samples to the Trombay police through speed post while a few other reports will be hand delivered," added Garad.

However, the Trombay police say they have not received any report from the FSL. "We are not aware about the findings of the forensic tests," said deputy commissioner Dilip Sawant.

The police had sent about 20 forensic samples for analysis, which included clothes of the victim and the accused, blood and urine samples, and vaginal swab samples of the victim. FSL officials had analysed the samples on priority basis given the sensitive nature of the case.

The FSL had earlier submitted reports of the blood and urine test of the victim, in which traces of cannabis and alcohol were found.

The police are relying on the victim's statements and the forensic reports as evidence against the accused. What weakens the case is the lack of eyewitnesses and the fact that the victim had said she was unconscious when, as she claims, she was raped.

The six accused are students of different colleges in Mumbai and are in jail custody till May 13.
