Three college students, in a rush to reach Marine Drive before the clock struck 12 on New Year’s eve, landed up being arrested by the police for carrying cash amounting to Rs2.81 lakh, which they claimed they planned to spend that night itself.

The incident took place at MK Road at around 11.45pm, when the trio was stopped by the police at the nakabandi post.

The accused have been identified as Harpreet Singh Atwal, 18, Ranjit alias Sonu Sahu, 18 and Aakash Waghmare, 28, all of whom are Malad residents.

According to the police, the three accused are from middle class families and it was surprising to find them carrying such a large amount to spend in one night.

“We found the trio suspect and when we checked their bags, found they were carrying that much money. When asked about the cash, they informed the police that they were going to celebrate New Year at Marine Drive,” said police sub-inspector Nitin Shinde.

Later, the trio informed the police that they were going to meet their friend who was waiting for them at Marine Drive. “The accused told us that the money found in their bag belonged to their friend, Ravikant Jaiswal. They told us that Ravikant wanted to celebrate New Year lavishly. The police is trying to track him down,” said Shinde.

The police feels that the trio, along with Ravikant, must have engaged in some illegal activity to get money in order to have a big bash on New Year’s eve. “We are investigating the matter to find out the source of the money. The three have been unable to give any explanation about it so far,” said Shinde.

The trio was booked for carrying stolen and unaccountable money, and sent to judicial custody by the court before being released on bail.a_preety@dnaindia.net
