Three people have been arrested by the Vanrai police on Thursday for allegedly stabbing a senior citizen and robbing gold ornaments worth Rs70 lakh from her Goregaon residence.

The trio has been identified as Rohit alias Bhole Singh, 24, Shivam alias Gullu Singh, 19, and Sujit Singh, 33.

According to the police, victim Sangeeta Shenoy resides on the sixth floor of Suraj Heights, Sharma estate, at Goregaon (East) along with her husband Sudhakar and daughter Supriya, who works at a call centre in Malad (West).

“Accused Sujit Singh, who works as a junior artist in Bollywood, is the mastermind of the robbery. Singh resides in the same building as the victim. Singh’s wife had gone to her parents’ place, so he invited his friends Bhole and Gullu to his residence for a party on February 26,” said an officer of the Vanrai police station.

“During the party, Singh hatched the plan with Bhole and Gullu to loot Shenoy’s residence. He knew that Shenoy’s daughter had got married recently and hence gold ornaments would be kept at her house. He also knew that Shenoy stays alone in the daytime,” said senior police inspector Suresh Shinde.

The very next day, i.e. February 27, Bhole and Gullu entered the society telling the watchman that they were from Mahanagar gas company, added Shinde.

“They then went to the victim’s resident on the pretext of taking reading of the meter. Once inside, they gagged her and asked her to part with the gold ornaments. When the victim tried to free herself, the duo attacked her with a knife. She received stab wounds on both her hands,” said Shinde.

The duo then ransacked the entire house and made away with gold ornaments worth Rs70 lakh. “During investigation, we came to know that two people had visited Singh’s place earlier and that his wife was not at home. We then started questioning Singh. Initially, he avoided saying anything, but soon sang the facts. We then arrested Bhole and Gullu from their respective residences at Nalasopara,” said another officer.
Asked about the motive, Shinde said Singh told his interrogators that he wanted to buy a new car and gift gold ornaments to his wife.
