A couple of professional thieves masquerading as nannies were recently arrested by the Cuffe Parade police, for allegedly stealing ornaments worth Rs22.80 lakhs from a sharebroker’s residence.
The two also have similar cases registered against them at the Juhu and Khar police stations, sources said.

Within the first hour on the first day of work with their new employer, they decamped with the booty. The police have also arrested four of their accomplices, who helped them in disposing of the ornaments.

The nannies have been identified as Ramzanbi Shamshu Shaikh, 27, a resident of Masjid Bunder, and Fatima Feroz Khan 26, a Govandi resident.

The police said that complainant Mamta Ulhas Verma, 24, a sharebroker and resident of Usha Sadan Building in Colaba, had employed Shaikh and Khan through a common contact on January 10. The pair had identified themselves as Manju and Shanti.

“The victim explained to them their work, which involved taking care of her child, and went for a shower. On returning after an hour, she saw the cupboard ajar, and found gold and diamond studded ornaments missing from inside. The duo was absconding, following which Verma lodged a theft complaint against them,” said an officer from Cuffe Parade police station.

Their sketches were prepared, he added, and the police were on their trail. “We received information that one of the women involved in the crime would be arriving near the BPT godown at Masjid Bunder. On Tuesday, a trap was laid, and she was nabbed. She admitted to having committing the theft,” said the officer.

She then gave the police information about Khan, who was later nabbed from near Sessions Court. “We have collected stolen goods worth Rs26,000 from them,” the officer said.

Their interrogations led to the arrests of Ganesh Naidu, Saif Rafiq Mulani, Ayub Rindani and Hazma Motiwala on Saturday.

“The quartet used to help the arrested women in disposing of the stolen booty,” said the officer.
