Mumbai: In an apparent bid to frighten the police, a thief consumed poison before coming into the Vile Parle police station. He had committed theft in five houses over last five months. The accused has been identified as Simon Balsingh Nadar, 24.

According to Vile Parle police, Nadar, who lives with his sister in Bhayander (E), had looted five houses after breaking the lock in Vile Parle (east) area between January to May this year. "When we reached Nadar's house in Bhayender, he was not at home. Nadar's sister promised to inform us when he came home,"said police official.

"Next day, Nadar's sister told us that she would be coming with him to Vile Parle railway station around 9 am. Nadar's sister brought him to the police station before 9 am. Nadar had consumed poison before going to the police station," said assistant police inspector Rajendra Kane of the Vile Parle police station. "Nadar thought that by consuming poison, the police would get intimidated and would eventually release him. Possibilities have also been visualised that he may have been afraid that the police might ill treat his sister for his misdeeds and thus consumed poison for diverting the police's attention," said Kane.

After coming to the police station, Nadar vomited two or three times. Police then realised that something was wrong. "After asking many times he confessed to have taken poison. We admitted him in VN Desai hospital," said the police official.

Nadar was arrested on June 15 after the treatment was completed. Police have recovered 80% of the stolen booty from him. Earlier, Nadar was also arrested by Goregoan police in nine house-breaking cases and was in jail from 2003 to 2005.
