The New Year’s Eve means merrymaking for most people, but for some others, especially those in the hospitality industry, it is the busiest night of the year. To keep the fun pumping through the night, an army of waiters, delivery boys, chefs and djs work relentlessly on December 31, away from their family and friends.

Though most are used to it, some wish they could also celebrate like the others. Chef Joy Bhattacharya, executive chef, Trident, has been working every New Year’s Eve for the last two decades. “I think it’s now in my system to work on December 31. I would feel odd if I wasn’t working on this night,” he said. Sometimes, his family does join him at the hotel, but he says he likes bringing in the New Year with his staff and guests.

Chef Vicky Ratnani, executive chef at popular bistro Aurus, shares the feeling. “When the guests are satisfied and happy, it’s a different high altogether. I like socialising with the guests and wishing them a happy New Year,” he said.

DJ Willie, who was spinning at Hyatt Regency on December 31, has not partied with his friends on New Year’s Eve for over 15 years. “I do miss being with friends and family, but I enjoy what I am doing. And, besides, this is the most happening day of the year, and the money is great too,” he said.

Pankaj Dosra, assistant manager of in-house restaurant Ming Yank, and a cocktail specialist at Taj Lands End, feels that there is no other time in the year when there are so many people laughing and enjoying themselves.

“It is a party, and we all feel part of it,” he said. Jason Mendonca, a bartender at Blue Frog club would also rather work than party with friends. “We pop champagnes at midnight, and the staff has a shot too. After the party winds up, we have a small one of our own with our managers and staff,” he said.

Rohit Kharose, a waiter at Ambassador Hotel, says he misses being with his friends, “But I enjoy working as we are all together, and celebrating with my manager and colleagues is also a lot of fun.”
