Earlier last week, the fishermen of Dighi in Raigad district went out into the Arabian Sea on their usual trip. But instead of netting their usual catch, they returned with a massive whale shark.
“It is obvious that it was an accident; the fishermen did not intend to catch this particular fish,” a forest department official said.

The fishermen first tried to sell the whale in their local market where they auction their daily catch, but they found no buyers for the fish weighing 780kg.

After taking adequate measures to preserve the whale, it was transported to Mumbai as  it has a bigger market than those in Dighi and Murud. “But even in Mumbai, no one showed any interest in buying the fish, apart from a few enquiring about which fish it was and its takeaway price,” the official added.

With no takers till Thursday and knowing that they could not keep it in cold storage due to its size and weight, the fishermen were left with no option but to discard it. “Later, it was loaded into a fishing trawler and dumped in the sea. We don’t know the exact location,” the official said.

The forest department has initiated an inquiry to know more about the incident. The report on the case will be finalised in a couple of weeks.
