Yet another attempt by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to move the Hanuman temple on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) failed, on Thursday, after residents refused to budge. The temple, which is located in the middle of the road, has already delayed the widening work at JVLR. The local residents, however, feel that the spot at which the temple is currently located helps them get positive vibes.

The temple, which many residents believe was built almost 200 years ago by a person named Paranjpe, is proving to be a major hindrance for authorities. Despite several attempts made by the resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) team of the MMRDA, the temple still stands at a spot that could prove fatal for vehicles. The MMRDA officials have tried to reason with local residents but to no avail.

According to AR Bidarkar, R&R chief, MMRDA, the officials were told not to move the temple as the residents get positive vibes from its current location. “Local MLA Naseem Khan was also present during Thursday’s meeting. We have now decided to form a joint committee of officials as well as residents. We will look to resolve the issue within a week,” Bidarkar told DNA.

But the residents seem in no mood to relent. “Those who have tried to move the temple in the past have had to pay a heavy price. Prashant Sharma (a developer), who tried to construct a building around the temple and tried to move it, had to face the wrath. Some of his labourers died while they tried to move the temple,” local Shiv Sena leader Uday Shirke said.

“We have immense faith in the temple and the idol is Swayambhu (self generated). It was found in the Powai lake hundreds of years ago. If it has to be shifted, the decision will have to be taken only by the Paranjpe family, who originally owned the land.”
