Even as Mumbaikars eagerly wait for the metro to become operational, the first batch of four metro rakes has arrived in the city. The rakes will now be put through stringent tests before they actually run on the tracks to ease the city’s transport woes.

The metro rakes have 4 coaches each and the coaches have a minimum seating capacity of 50 passengers and 325 standees, which sums up to nearly 1,500 passengers per train. Also, for commuter convenience, the rakes have passenger information systems, digital route maps and the coaches have a reserved area for the physically challenged.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which owns 26% stake in the first phase of metro running between Versova and Ghatkopar, also released the design for the metro stations of the first phase route.

According to MMRDA additional metropolitan commissioner SVR Srinivas, the metro will bring a paradigm shift in the way people commute. “The stations will be equipped with elevators for easy access, especially for the physically challenged,” said Srinivas.
