The deja vu feeling had already set in when KPP Nair, secretary to justice PB Majmudar at the Bombay high court, left early for home on Monday.

Nair left at 6.30pm keeping in mind the disrupted train services, but as he reached Chuchgate station swarms of people had already gathered and the chaos had reigned in.

Nair was reminded of 26/7 when floods had caused havoc in the city and he was forced to walk back to his Bandra home from Churchgate. “There were blank display screens at the station, no trains and not enough space for even fresh air to pass, let alone a commuter. I almost thought I will have to walk back home again,” said Nair.

However, this time around, Nair had a saviour in justice SJ Kathawalla. After his futile attempts of catching a train, Nair met a colleague — Mrs Ingle — who happens to be justice Kathawalla’s secretary. She had been graced with the judge’s magnanimity. “He was very kindhearted. The moment sir (justice Kathawalla) heard that we were stranded, he sent his car and driver for us to be dropped home,” said Nair.

While Nair was dropped at Bandra, three others staffers of the judge also got dropped home in the car — justice Kathawalla’s chaupadar living in Bandra, the secretary residing at Borivli, and
the driver himself, who stays at Virar.

“He was so kind that he even invited all of us to stay at his house in case we had problems traveling by road,” said Nair. “But we declined.”

Even though most city roads saw heavy traffic on Monday, Nair reached home in one hour. “The driver knew all routes that had lesser traffic and we also had a breezy drive on the sea link,” said Nair. “I thanked sir as it was very nice of him to lend his car.”

A modest justice Kathawalla declined to comment on his gesture.
