Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Tuesday lambasted senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh for praising “founder of Pakistan” Mohammed Ali Jinnah. “Advani created an ideological confusion by lauding Jinnah. Jaswant Singh has added to it,” Thackeray stated in an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamna.

Thackeray took potshots at BJP leaders for heaping praise on Jinnah. “I cannot understand why BJP leaders lose their composure over Jinnah. Jaswant Singh has tried to popularise his book Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence by praising Jinnah. It pains me that BJP leaders extol a person who was responsible for the country’s partition and who made Muslims radical.”

“Advani termed Jinnah secular. If Jinnah was secular, then why did Advani leave Sindh province in Pakistan and come to India? How can a person who demanded a separate state for Muslims be termed secular? Calling Jinnah secular is an insult to all those who shed their blood for India’s independence. It is due to this ideological confusion that Hindus became frustrated and directionless and the impact was seen in the Lok Sabha elections,” he said.

Thackeray refused to blame Jawaharlal Nehru or Sardar Patel for the partition. “Jinnah demanded Pakistan out of his personal ego. The Congress leaders bowed before his demand because they were tired. Nehru or Mahatma Gandhi may have made lakhs of mistakes but it does not mean that someone should portray Jinnah as a historic figure,” he said.
