The police believe that setting fire to vital installations could be the new modus operandi of radical outfits.
“The arrested duo was planning to sabotage and set fire to ONGC tankers, Thakkar Mall in Borivli, and Mangaldas Market. They were under our surveillance for nearly three weeks and were very close to causing some destruction,” said KP Raghuvanshi, Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief.
According to senior police officials, earlier terrorists were found using electronic timers, detonators, gelatin sticks and RDX mixed with ammonium nitrate to set off a blast. “But setting fire to vital installations is something new,” said one of them.
The police believe that difficulty in sourcing RDX could have led the group to adopt this modus operandi.“It is very difficult to source RDX. This could be one reason for them to opt for setting installations on fire. Another possibility could be that it is less risky and very difficult to trace the culprit,” said the officer.
According to the police, it would be almost impossible to prove that a fire was set by some terrorists or it was an act of terrorism. “A detailed interrogation of the two would shed more light as to how they were planning the execution of setting vital installations on fire,” said the officer.
