In a demonstration of communal harmony, Hindu and Muslim villagers of Rameshwar (Rui) in Latur district have re-constructed a temple and a mosque which had been destroyed by zealots in the past.

As a message of peace and harmony to the society at large, the reconstructed temple and mosque will be inaugurated on April 9 during a national conference on communal harmony.

The conference has been organised by the Pune-based World Peace Centre of the Maharashtra Academy of Engineering and Education Research, Maharashtra Institute of Technology,  Mahatma Gandhi Gram Swaraj Vikas Prashikshan Kendra of Rameshwar and the villagers.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, chairman of the organising committee for the national conference, Vishwanath Karad said that the ancient Ram temple was destroyed by some anti-Hindu zealots during the battle between the Peshwas and the Nizam of Hyderabad around 275 years ago. About 60 years ago, a masjid and dargah in the same village were destroyed by some anti-Muslims as a revenge for the violence during the Razakar Movement in 1947-48.

“The newly reconstructed shrines have been built through the joint efforts of members of both communities. Residents of this small village have initiated this innovative programme which is aimed at achieving Hindu-Muslim unity. Keeping this in mind, a national event has been organised where renowned people from various communities will participate,” he said.

Politicians and ministers such as Sushilkumar Shinde, Chhagan Bhujbal and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind leader, Maulana Mehmood Madani, MP, who also represents the Deoband seminary will be there for the event.

Well-known scholars such as Pandit NK Sharma, founder president of Universal Association for Spiritual Awareness, ex-member, Planning Commission, Bhalchandra Mungekar, scientist Vijay Bhatkar and chairman of India International Multiversity, Syed Wahid Hussain Chishti of Dargah Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (Ajmer) and filmmaker Jabbar Patel will also be among those present.

Karad appealed to all the citizens to participate in this event aimed at uniting all the religions in our country. The conference will discuss issues relating to communal harmony.
