A 17-year-old boy was arrested on Saturday afternoon by Mumbai crime branch officers from Narnal, in Haryana, for allegedly sending an email to Air India threatening to blow up an Air India flight. The airlines received the email on October 23, at 4.48pm, after which airports all over the country were put on high alert. On Saturday, the police revealed the boy had simply done this out of frustration and anger at his father, who wanted him to study and become a doctor.

According to the police, the boy claimed to be under tremendous pressure because of this. “The teenager says he took science as a subject in the first year of college only because his father wanted him to become a doctor, but he found it hard to cope with his studies. Later, he took admission in the BCom section instead,” joint commissioner of police, Crime, Rakesh Maria, said.

The accused created a new email ID to send the threat mail to Air India. “The email is full of abusive language, which cannot be disclosed here,” Maria said. He added that the teenager allegedly claimed to have targeted the airlines because he could not take his anger out on anyone else. The email was sent from a personal computer in his Haryana home.

The cyber cell section of the Mumbai crime branch tracked down the IP address to nab the boy. On Saturday, the police left Haryana for Mumbai along with the boy and the computer that was used to send the email. “We will interrogate the accused once he reaches Mumbai on Sunday. The police will try to verify the reason for sending the threat mail,” Maria added. The accused will be booked for sending the email and for misusing information technology to do so.
