The body of a 14-year-old girl, who went missing from her Chembur home on Friday morning, was found early on Saturday, stuffed in a gunny bag in a ground floor apartment of the same building she lived in. The victim, Sonali Vasant Bellur, had been murdered, allegedly by unidentified persons. The teenager’s mouth had been gagged with a handkerchief, and her hands were tied behind her back.

Sonali lived with her parents in a fourth floor flat in Pancharatna building (No 12) in MHADA Colony, Vashi Naka, in Chembur. She left her home at around 10am on Friday to buy a shampoo sachet, but never returned. After searching the area, her mother Laxmi, a domestic help, lodged a missing persons complaint the same evening with the RCF Police. Laxmi also informed her brother Arjun Guru, a resident of Ambernath, that Sonali had gone missing and he rushed to Chembur.

Later, Guru and his 16-year-old nephew Arun, Sonali’s older brother, began an intensive search for Sonali and, at around 3.20am on Saturday, came across the gunny bag with her body in it, inside Flat No 9. Guru then informed the police. “We were searching all over the building with torchlights, when my nephew and I came across a gunny bag in Flat No 9,” Guru said. “The bag was slightly open, and there was clearly a human body stuffed inside it. We mustered the courage and opened it a little more, and found Sonali’s body in it.”

“The body was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital for a post-mortem,” police inspector Prasad Dharia of RCF police station said. “There was an injury mark on the back of her head. The flat in which the body was found, has been abandoned for several years. The door and windows of the flat were broken.” Dharia added that the police have registered a case of murder but are trying to ascertain if Sonali was also raped. “We are awaiting the post-mortem report,” he said. “If rapeis confirmed by the post-mortem, we will add the charge of rape to the caseas well.”
