Parents and teachers on hunger strike at Azad Maidan are still awaiting an assurance from the state on the fifth day of their strike.
Out of 24 members, only 16 managed to continue with the strike.

A couple of senior citizens, who participated in the strike, were not keeping well on Sunday evening. Adamant about getting a written assurance from the state, some of them have even come back after hospitalisation.

The state has assured to speed up the process of bringing in the fee regulation act soon but could not make an official announcement due to the ongoing assembly.

According to Jayant Jain, from the Forum For Fairness in Education, several teachers and parents were hospitalised. “One of the activists, a senior citizen, has refused to even go to the hospital, as he did not wish to be put on saline during the strike.

They want a solution this time and they are just not ready to take no for an answer. Several state officials have visited us, but none of them are ready to give us any assurances. They have just promised to speed up the process and bring the act in place as soon as possible. But that is not enough,” said Jain.

Parents and teachers from across the state are supporting the group which is fighting against corruption in the education system. The forum has been demanding an upper limit to the fee structure in schools in the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (fee regulation) Act, and also an early implementation of the act.

“As a temporary solution, we have also demanded a stay on the hike for the next academic year. Several schools, worried about the upcoming act, have increased their fees and have also set a deadline of April end to ensure that the annual fee comes in before a decision has been taken,” added Jain.

According to an official, it is not possible for the government to put a stay on the fee hike without the act.
