In a bid to improve the quality of teaching in the city, the American School of Bombay, Bandra-Kurla Complex, has begun a unique initiative. The school is lending its expertise to teachers of less privileged students on making their classes more creative and fun.

Conceived as a part of its social responsibility, the school has been working with teachers and project managers of five NGOs that deal with the education of underprivileged children — Akansha, Seema, MMC, Asima and an international NGO. Moreover, the course is completely free, and teachers also get a certificate upon completion.

School superintendent Craig Johnson said, “We started this programme as part of our community outreach activities. We have expertise in the form of teachers trained in innovative teaching approaches that meet the needs of the 21st century learner.”

A taskforce consisting of 22 members — educational experts, counsellors and the CSR coordinator from the school — are training these teachers. After identifying a topic, the school finds the best people to teach it. The training programme includes 10 sessions for two years, and has 47 participants at present.

“We have observed that the teachers are very talented and they use a range of effective strategies to manage learning in their classes. Our goal is to share with them the current best practices in education and the use of innovative technologies to enhance students’ learning,’’ said Johnson.
