Tata Motors and the Japanese New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (Nedo) on Wednesday inaugurated an environment-friendly dual-fuel based power generation facility at the Tata Motors’s plant in Pimpri.

The facility was inaugurated by PM Telang, managing director (India operations) of Tata Motors; Sadao Wasaka, executive director of NEDO; Tetsuo Tsuyuguchi, managing director of JFE Engineering Corporation, Japan; and Katsutoshi Sakai, managing director of JFE India Pvt Ltd; in the presence of other senior
officials and dignitaries.

Tata Motors’ Pimpri plant was selected for the project by the Union government, the government of Japan and Nedo to produce power through clean environment technology. To set up this project, a memorandum of understanding was signed by the Centre, government of Japan, Nedo and Tata Motors.

Teams from Tata Motors and Nedo worked on the project for two years. Two 2.5-MW diesel-electric power generators sets were identified for conversion into dual-fuel generators, using natural gas as the main fuel and diesel as the pilot fuel. The project has become successful for operating diesel generator sets on natural gas and light diesel oil.

The Tata Group has embarked on a journey to reduce its cumulative carbon footprint. Changing from existing liquefied fuel to clean burning gaseous fuels will help it reduce 3,770 tonnes of carbon dioxide in a year.
