Questions have been raised over whether the activists’ march from ‘Tarapur to Jaitapur’ to oppose the proposed 9,900 MW Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant (JNPP) will ever reach its destination after over 100 protesters were detained at Boisar on Saturday.

Government authorities have issued orders prohibiting protesters from entering Ratnagiri district, saying the march could ignite further violence in the project area.

The march which began on Saturday from Tarapur faced its first hurdle as protesters were detained and stopped from proceeding further. The activists, including retired high court judge BG Kolse-Patil, Vaishali Patil of Konkan Vinashkari Prakalp Virodhi Samiti, Banwarilal Sharma, HM Desarda and ex-admiral Ramdas, were detained by police authorities.

In the wake of orders issued by the Ratnagiri district collector office, the Thane police had asked protesters to cancel their march. However the protesters were adamant on reaching Jaitapur.

“We have planned this march to let people know the truth behind the JNPP. We have been detained under IPC section 68 by the local police station. We will not back down and will go ahead in any condition,” Vaishali Patil told DNA over the phone. The activists were later released and proceeded for the next rally in Thane city.

The first rally began in Tarapur on Saturday, under the heavy deployment of police personnel. The rally was addressed by speakers ranging from activists, retired judges and scientists.

“The protest march is to give a different perspective on nuclear power. As more rallies take place, people will get to understand the project and our opposition more clearly. That is why the government is stopping us from marching forward,” said Satyajit Chavan of Konkan Bachao Samiti.

Over a 100 demonstrators were detained by Bosiar police after they tried to reach Tarapur on Saturday. When the police said they would have to detain them till any communication from Mantralaya, the detainees began a hunger strike to protest what they called “unjust detention.”
