The vice chancellor of the University of Pune (UoP), RK Shevgaonkar, said the university system of education should be taken to rural regions and efforts must be made to percolate the benefits of education to rural India.

Speaking at the CII-panel discussion on ‘Sustaining growth through education & research’ here on Monday, he said fundamental subjects are the most neglected by students and more efforts should be taken by the faculties to enhance these skills at the grass-roots level.

“The UoP is planning to initiate a technology programme wherein there would be an active involvement of industry at each stage and it will define what graduates they would like to produce in future,’’ he said.

Chairman of CII-Western region task force on higher education and vice chairman and CEO of Zensar Technologies, Ganesh Natarajan, discussed the concept of creating 50 knowledge cities and building a sustainable ecosystem to live and work there.

According to NASSCOM data, 3.1 million students graduate every year and among them 13% are unemployable, said Alok Tiwari, head of global competency assessment and certification operations at Infosys Technologies.

“The major challenge at Infosys education and research wing is to make the programme qualitative as well as quantitative for the faculty and the students,’’ he added.

Director (technical), Bharat Forge Ltd, Mukund Mavalankar said, “Innovation should prepare the ground for change. We have to train our workforce to enable them to apply science and technology to solve practical problems,’’ he said.

Founder chairman and MD of Persistent Systems Ltd, Anand Deshpande, was also one of the panelists for the session.

Chairman of CII Pune zonal council and managing director of Demag Cranes & Components, Suhas Baxi, was the moderator of the panel discussion.
