Mumbai Airport was shut for over 45 minutes today after tail-winds created problems in aircraft operations, an airport official said.
"No flight operations were undertaken between 1.04 pm to 1.50 pm from the short-runway due to winds of 10 knots," a Mumbai International Airport Limited spokesperson said.
However, no diversion was reported during this period, he said.
The DGCA, in one of its recent directives, has barred flight operations at the short-runway if tail-winds are above seven knots.
A tail wind is a wind that blows in the direction of travel of an object and is unfavourable for takeoffs and landings.
On Tuesdays between 12 noon and 6 pm, the intersection between the two cross-runways at Mumbai airport is closed for recarpeting of the main runway (09-27), which is scheduled to be completed by March 31 next year.
A shortened runway -- almost half the length of the 3,448-metre main runway -- is used during this period when only small aircraft can land and take-off.
