Swiss device may lessen water woes

Insufficient rains have left the citizens with no option but to face a year-long water cut. Huge wastage of water only compounds the problem. However, a Switzerland-based innovation house, Creaholic, may offer a solution to the problem.

Creaholic has come up with an automatic handwasher as an effective way to reduce water consumption.

“A person uses about 1.5 litres of water to wash his hands. This quantity can be reduced to one decilitre which is 10 times less,” said Denis Crottet, the inventor of the system.
The device, which is internationally patented, produces a first flow which is a combination of water, soap and air. There is a gap before the second flow to allow cleaning of hands. The second flow contains only water for rinsing. “By controlling the mixing of soap, water and air, we avoid wastage of water,” said Crottet.

Though still in experimental stage, Crottet has plans of commercial production of the system.

Madhav Chitale, an expert on water, said that the invention can be highly useful for Mumbai. “Water consumption for purposes other than bathing in Mumbai is around 40 litres per head per day. This can be reduced to 10 litres,” Chitale said.

With this, the city can save around 450MLD water every day which would be a major boost to water conservation and a relief from water cuts.

This is not the only product the innovation house has in its pipeline. Luc Amgwerd, a partner, said they are in the process of designing a chemical free water filtering device.
Amgwerd said the device will have a less than $1 per (Rs48) unit production cost and is expected to filter about half a litre of water without using any chemicals.

When submerged in water, it will act like a sponge and expand containing the filtered water. “The product can be used 30 times which means 15 litres of water can be filtered without chemicals,” he said.
