Officers of the Khar police station have busted part of a gang of robbers that was involved in break-ins and car and bike thefts across the city. Four members of the gang were arrested recently, but the police suspect that there may have been as many as 25 others.
The arrested quartet has been identified as Wasim Memon, 21, Firoj Shaikh, 23, Mohammad Shahid Shaikh, 22, and Habibullah Khan, 32. The police believe Khan was the gang’s brain.
Police got a lead to the gang quite by accident. Last week, a night patrol intercepted Memon at Ambedkar Road in Khar (West). Memon was riding a motorcycle, but the patrol found his behaviour suspicious.
According to senior inspector Mangesh Pote, Memon had no satisfactory answer when asked what he was doing in the area. The police also discovered that the motorcycle he was riding was stolen. So they took him in for interrogation.
Memon revealed that he was part of a gang of robbers. He also revealed the names of other members, following which police arrested the other three.
Last September, the four had hired an Innova vehicle from Aradhana Travels in Andheri (West) to visit the Shivpura dargah in Pune.
On the way back, they stabbed and dumped the driver on the highway and fled with the vehicle. A case was registered with the Haveli police station in Pune. “Habib had booked the car in his name and paid an advance of Rs5,000 to the travel agency,” Pote said.
