While investigating the series of rapes and murders of minors in the Cuffe Parade area, the police have chanced upon an absconding accused, who could provide the missing link in the recent rape and murder of two-and-half year-old Angel. It was while interrogating suspects in the latest case that the police ran into the 26-year-old Promod Kumar Mahanto, an accused in yet another minor’s kidnap back in 2005.

Apparently, it was Promod who called an electrician to tackle a power outage in the Ambedkar Nagar colony, where Angel lived. The body of Angel, who went missing exactly at this hour, was found dumped in the sea behind the Maker Towers at Nariman Point a day after she went missing.

“Promod, who lives very close to the victim’s house, was seen near Angel’s house as he was the one who had called the electrician to check the light connection,” said a official of the Cuffe Parade police. Upon checking Promod’s phone records, the police found that his time of calling the electrician matched with the time when Angel was kidnapped.

During interrogation, Promod told the police that he was an absconder in the kidnapping case of a 15-year-old girl in 2005. “After being arrested in the 2005 case and a charge sheet being filed, Promod absconded and never appeared before the court,” said the official, adding that they will go through the 2005 charge sheet to find out if Promod was booked for rape.

While the police have arrested Promod in the 2005 case, they are now awaiting his DNA report so that they can match it with samples taken from the minors found raped and killed in the Cuffe Parade area. “His act on the night Angel went missing and his previous record has led us to suspect his involvement,” said the official.

Promod will be produced in the court on Thursday.
