The five-year campaign against female foeticide announced by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP, Supriya Sule, will begin with a four-day padyatra from Naigaon in Satara district on August 25.

It will conclude in Pune on August 28. A film, Savitrichya Leki, will be screened during the campaign.

Sule shared details of the campaign with media persons at a press conference on Monday. where the logo of the campaign was also made public.

The campaign 'Jagar Ha Janivanca, Tumchya Maza Lekinca' will be run by Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai. Sule is convenor of the Pratishthan and will lead the padyatra. About 500 girls, aged 18 to 24 years, and 200 boys from all over the state will take part in the padyatra.

Naigaon, the place from where the procession is to begin, is the birthplace of Savitribai Phule, who was the pioneer of women's education. Public works minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, will be present. Home minister, RR Patil, and his daughter will join the padyatra for 2 km.

The padyatra will culminate at Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch in Pune with a state-level Yuvati Parishad at the same venue. Three thousand girls from all over the state will take part in the conference along with representatives of social organisations.

NCP president, Sharad Pawar will be present at the concluding function. Five women with remarkable contribution to society will be feted.

"It is a non-political event, but we have invited all parties to participate and support the cause. It mainly aims at sensitisation of society, government, administration and particularly the youth who are future parents on the issue. We are aiming at gender equality," said Sule.

The old customs and beliefs are mainly responsible for the negative attitude towards girls and therefore the campaign is aimed at awareness, she added.

The campaign will be run in phases over the next five years. Under the campaign, the organisers will press for strict implementation of laws against female foeticide, create awareness about orthodox customs and beliefs leading to killing of the girl child, sensitisation of men, creating pressure groups with non-governmental organisations and endeavour to bring all girls in the mainstream of education. Sensitisation and awareness will be created through various activities among all sections of society.
